In the early 1980s, Mike Mathes was still a student at the Städel Art Academy in Frankfurt am Main, when he was diagnosed HIV-positive.
At this point he decided to actively confront exclusion and isolation and to "show his face" in an enlightening way. In the meantime, a long way lies behind him, with many ups and downs, which clearly show that his openness lifted the artistic debate to another level. He was able to move many to join his commitment and to "show face" in/with his work.
